It's my characters that I work hardest at and care most about.  Mandy, the blind teenager who is the main character in THE WINDOW, is someone very close to my heart.  I first met her the day she appeared on my computer screen.  She had a proud and independent voice, the sound of a girl ready to face whatever might come her way.  She had a lot to learn, though, both about blindness and about letting other people into her life, and I learned right along with her.

To help understand Mandy and the challenges she faced, I tried to experience some of what she would need to know.  I learned the basics of reading braille and about orientation and mobility skills.  I honed the manuscript with help from people who would know what I'd gotten right or wrong--teachers and counselors and young people who, like Mandy, are making their own way in a world that comes to them through senses other than sight.
