Why THE BIG BURN Worked for Ronan Local Topic: We live in fire country. Though THE BIG BURN takes place nearly 100 years ago, the danger of fire and the work of those who try to control it are very current and close to home to almost anyone who lives in the Northwest. We have sisters and fathers and cousins who work as wildland firefighters. Or we live close enough that our houses have been or could be threatened by fire. Or both. Local Author: Jeanette Ingold lives in Western Montana and was willing to visit the school and talk to students. Knowing the author lives just down the road was intriguing to students. She is a "famous" person who is nearby. Actually being able to meet her really leaves a lasting impression and gets students interested. Universal Issues: Love, adventure, danger, growing up, quarrelling with parents--nearly every issue raised in the book is relevant to students. There are many events and ideas students can relate to. |
