THE WINDOW

Discussion Questions

  •     You have probably read other time-travel books.  Compare the time-travel device used in THE WINDOW with the devices used in other books.
  •     Before the accident, Mandy and her mother frequently moved around the country.  How did this experience affect Mandy's ability to adapt to new situations?  Do you think her reactions would have been different if she had lived all her life in a stable home?
  •    More and more adopted children are trying to find their birth parents.  On the whole, do you think this is a good thing or not?  Why?  Do you think most of these reunions turn out well or not?  Why?  How do you think the adoptive parents feel?
  •     Helen Keller was once asked, if she had the choice would she rather be only blind or only deaf.  She answered she would rather be only blind.  Why do you think she said this?  Find examples in the book, from Mandy's life and from Ted's life, that would support or not support Ms. Keller's choice.

Further Activities and Research

  •    Find some examples of braille in your community; for instance, many elevators have the floor numbers in braille.  Try to learn to read a few words in braille.
  •     Try to imagine how Mandy must have felt, losing her sight so suddenly.  Cover your eyes securely and have a friend take your elbow to guide you around the school or a mall.  Try to use background noises to help you locate things, as well as help from your friend.  Trade places and have your friend try the same experience.
