In my conference talks and school visits, I
take readers into my books, telling the stories behind them,
presenting a rousing slideshow, and demonstrating the research and writing techniques that turn an idea into a
finished manuscript.
From mountain wildfires and the young people who fight them,
to concert halls and musical prodigies, from today's school world to Depression
years when wandering teens found hope in the CCC--these are what I write and
talk about. I bring books and history alive, encourage readers,
and share my passion for writing in presentations appropriate for both small
and large groups.
In writing workshops I help
students find new ways to reach for their best stories and I provide an
inside look at the publishing process--a how-to that's a favorite part of my school visits.
In in-service presentations to teachers, I relate my writing
process, offering suggestions for activities that can be carried out by
students.
And in a special program designed for primary grades, I use slides and
my humorous short stories for younger readers to show
how ideas for writing are all around us, just waiting to be picked up and turned
into something fun to read.
