One Book-One Community:  THE BIG BURN
Contributed by Christa Umphrey, a teacher in Ronan, Montana.
with photos from Lorri Edwards, an Expeditionary Learning school designer

One Book-Community is a program that began in Seattle in 1998.  The idea is to get everyone reading the same thing at the same time and then get them all together to talk about it.  Ronan began an annual program based on this model three years ago.  THE BIG BURN  was the selection for the second year.  Through implementing this program Ronan was trying to:

bulletBuild community (both within the school and the Ronan Community) through reading
bulletUse the community to help us build readers
bulletHelp students understand reading is important and not only done in school
